Variations

Group parent/child variation families inside SellerMagnet so your analytics and reporting read a size/colour family as one product. This grouping is local to SellerMagnet and never changes your Amazon

📋 Overview

Variations (also called the Variation Manager) is the tool in the Listing Manager AI suite that groups your parent/child variation families - the size, colour, and style variants that belong under a single parent ASIN - so SellerMagnet can treat a whole family as one product.

On Amazon, a variation family is one parent ASIN (the non-buyable "hub") with several child ASINs hanging off it (for example one shirt design in S / M / L, or one mug in three colours). Variations reads those relationships as they are currently stored for your catalog and lays them out family by family, so you can see at a glance which children are grouped, which are standing on their own, and which have lost their parent.

Grouping a family here makes your analytics and reporting cleaner: instead of five orphaned size variants each looking like a separate product, they roll up under one parent, so family-level numbers read the way you actually think about the product.

A connected Amazon account is required. Variations reads your catalog and its variation relationships from your connected Amazon account, and Refresh from Amazon pulls live data through the Amazon API. Without a connection there is no catalog to group.

Accessing Variations

  1. Log in to your SellerMagnet dashboard.

  2. Open Listing Optimizer in the left menu, then switch to the Listing Manager tab.

  3. Choose Variations from the suite.

  4. At the top of the page, pick the marketplace from the selector and, if you like, filter with the search box (search by ASIN, SKU, or product name).

📋 The stats row

Four tiles across the top summarize the families in the selected marketplace:

Stat
What it counts

Total Families

Every variation family in the current marketplace (matching your search, if any)

Multi-Variant Families

Families that hold more than one variant - a real parent with several children

Standalone Products

Products that are not part of any grouped family - single listings on their own

Missing Parent ASIN

Families that have no parent ASIN set - the children that need attaching

These tiles count the whole catalog for the selected marketplace, not just the families visible on the current page - so the numbers hold steady as you page through the list. (If you ever see a small "(this page)" label on a tile, it means a fallback count is being shown for the current page instead of the full catalog-wide figure.)

The Missing Parent ASIN tile is the one to watch: it is your worklist of families that have lost, or never had, a parent.

Reading a family

Each family is one card. The card header shows a representative image and title, the parent ASIN (when there is one), and the variant count. On the right, a badge tells you the family's state at a glance:

Badge
Meaning

Parent ASIN (blue)

The family has a parent set and is grouped normally

Standalone (amber)

The product is on its own, not part of a grouped family

No Parent (red)

The family has children but no parent ASIN - it needs one assigned

A second SKU count badge shows how many SKUs are in the family.

Click a family header to expand it. The variants table lists each child with its image, product name, ASIN, SKU, price, stock, status (Active / Inactive), and fulfillment. Every ASIN links straight to the listing on the matching Amazon marketplace. On each row, a Change Parent button lets you re-point that single variant to a different parent.

Deep link to a family: You can open the page with ?asin=YOURASIN on the URL (for example /listing-variations?asin=B0XXXXXXXX). The family containing that ASIN expands and scrolls into view once the first page of results has loaded.

Step by step

View your families

1

Pick a marketplace

Use the marketplace selector at the top. The stats row and the family list both update to that marketplace.

2

Find a family

Scroll the list, or type an ASIN, SKU, or product name into the search box to filter. Use the Prev / Next pager at the bottom to move through large catalogs (families load in pages).

3

Open it

Click the family header to expand it and see every child variant with its ASIN, SKU, price, stock, status, and fulfillment.

Assign a parent to a broken family

Use this when a family shows the No Parent badge and appears in the Missing Parent ASIN count.

1

Click Assign Parent

On a No Parent family, click Assign Parent. A small popover opens and tells you how many variants will be grouped - and reminds you that Amazon is unchanged.

2

Choose the parent ASIN

Type an ASIN, or pick one from the suggestions - SellerMagnet offers the parent ASINs already on screen, largest family first, because the usual fix is mapping an orphan back into an existing family.

3

Save

Click Save (or press Enter). Every variant in the family is grouped under that parent inside SellerMagnet, and the list reloads. A confirmation appears: "Grouping updated in SellerMagnet. Amazon is unchanged."

Change the parent of a single variant

1

Click Change Parent on the row

Expand the family and click Change Parent on the variant you want to move. A popover shows its current parent (or "No parent").

2

Enter the new parent ASIN

Type or pick the new parent ASIN, then click Save (or press Enter). That one variant is re-pointed; the rest of the family is left as it was.

Edit a family in the side panel

1

Open Edit Family

Click Edit Family on any family. A panel slides in from the right showing the Parent ASIN field and every variant as a chip.

2

Set the parent and adjust the variants

Type or change the Parent ASIN for the whole family. To take a variant out of the family, click the x on its chip - it will be detached (its parent cleared) when you save.

3

Save Changes

Click Save Changes. SellerMagnet detaches any variants you removed, then groups the remaining ones under the parent you set. The panel closes and the list reloads with the confirmation that Amazon is unchanged.

Refresh from Amazon overwrites your grouping. Because grouping here is local, running Refresh from Amazon re-reads the real parent ASINs from Amazon and replaces whatever you set. If Amazon still has the "broken" relationship, refreshing will bring it back. Fix the real parentage in Seller Central first, then refresh to pull the corrected structure in.

What "Refresh from Amazon" does

Refresh from Amazon is a read action - data flows from Amazon into SellerMagnet, never the other way. When you click it (on a family card, or in the Edit Family panel), SellerMagnet calls the Amazon API, looks up the current parent ASIN for each ASIN in that family, and updates its own stored grouping to match what Amazon reports right now.

Use it when:

  • You just corrected a variation relationship in Seller Central and want SellerMagnet to reflect the new structure.

  • A family looks stale and you want the latest parentage straight from Amazon rather than from the last sync.

Because it overwrites local grouping with Amazon's current truth, it is also the reset button: if your manual grouping drifts from what you want, refreshing puts it back in step with Amazon.

Why local grouping is useful

If Variations does not change anything on Amazon, why group at all? Because the grouping drives how SellerMagnet reports on your catalog:

  • Cleaner analytics. A family that reads as one parent with its children rolls up into family-level numbers, instead of scattering across several unrelated-looking standalone listings.

  • A tidy worklist. The Missing Parent ASIN and Standalone Products counts give you a clear, ongoing view of which listings are not grouped the way you expect - useful even when the underlying Amazon relationships are correct and you simply want SellerMagnet's picture to match.

  • Faster navigation. Grouped families are easier to scan and search than a flat list of individual ASINs, and each variant still deep-links to its live Amazon page.

Think of it as organizing SellerMagnet's view of your catalog. To change the actual variation relationships shoppers see, you edit them in Seller Central and then use Refresh from Amazon to pull the result back in.

✅ Best Practices

  1. Fix real parentage on Amazon, group in SellerMagnet. If a variation is genuinely broken for buyers, correct it in Seller Central, then Refresh from Amazon here. Local grouping tidies reporting; it does not repair the live listing.

  2. Work the Missing Parent ASIN tile first. It is your shortlist of families that need attention - start there, use Assign Parent to map orphans back to an existing parent.

  3. Prefer the suggested parents. When assigning or changing a parent, pick from the offered ASINs (largest family first) so orphans land back in the family they belong to instead of creating a new one-off.

  4. Refresh after any Seller Central change. Anytime you edit variation relationships on Amazon, refresh the affected family so SellerMagnet's grouping stays in step.

  5. Remember refresh wins. Do not hand-group a family and expect it to survive a refresh - refreshing always re-reads Amazon and replaces local grouping.

❓ FAQ

Does grouping a family here change my listing on Amazon?

No. All grouping in Variations is local to SellerMagnet. Assigning, changing, or saving a parent ASIN updates only how SellerMagnet groups the listings for its own analytics and reporting. Your Amazon catalogue is not touched - the confirmation message states it plainly: "Grouping updated in SellerMagnet. Amazon is unchanged."

Then how do I actually fix a broken variation on Amazon?

Correct the parent-child relationship in Seller Central, then come back and click Refresh from Amazon on that family. SellerMagnet reads the updated structure from Amazon and updates its grouping to match.

What does Refresh from Amazon do?

It reads the current parent ASINs for that family's ASINs live from the Amazon API and updates SellerMagnet's stored grouping to match. It is a one-way read (Amazon → SellerMagnet). It also overwrites any manual grouping you set locally, so it doubles as a reset to Amazon's current truth.

What is the difference between "Standalone" and "No Parent"?

Standalone means the product is not part of any grouped family - a single listing on its own. No Parent means a family with children exists but has no parent ASIN set, so its variants are not attached to anything. The No Parent state is the one you usually want to resolve with Assign Parent.

Do I need a connected Amazon account?

Yes. Variations reads your catalog and its variation relationships from your connected Amazon account, and Refresh from Amazon pulls live data through the Amazon API. Without a connection there is nothing to display or group.

Can I remove a variant from a family?

Yes. Open Edit Family, click the x on a variant chip to mark it for removal, then Save Changes. That variant is detached (its parent cleared) inside SellerMagnet. As with all grouping here, the change is local and does not alter Amazon.
